He is survived by: his wife Hilda Byer Bates of Covington; his son Arlen Bates Jr. of Covington; his stepsons, Billy Gill of Hopewell, VA, Bobby Gill of Hopewell, VA and Keith Byer of Covington; his stepgrandson Brady Byer of Chester, VA; and his aunt Vernie Sexton of Covington. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
