He was predeceased by: his parents, Dallas A. Bates and Emma Bates (Pettyjohn); and his son Jason Bates. He is survived by: his children, Sarah Helen Bates (John Grimshaw) of Yorktown, Matthew Bates (Lori) of Winston Salem, NC, Anthony Bates (Tara) of Boone, NC and Andrew Bates (Katrina) of Covington; his siblings, Kenneth Bates (Young) of Woodbridge and Donna Brown (Steve) of Winston Salem, NC; and his former wife Debra L. Bates of Covington. He is also survived by seven grandchildren.
