He was predeceased by: his parents, Samuel Smith and Annie Leftwich Smith; his son Stephen A. "Looney" Smith; and his grandsons, Clayton Jackson and Andre Smith.
He is survived by: his wife Letha Sampson Smith; and his children, Gilbert "Courtney" Smith, Jr., Barry Smith, Tawanda "Lynn" Smith of Covington and Aurelia Jackson of Severn, MD. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family would like memorial donations in Mr. Smith's name be made to the Historical First Baptist Church on Lexington Ave. at 333 S. Lexington Ave., Covington, VA 24426.
