He was predeceased by : his parents, Nettie C. Poteat and Steve Poteat; his wife Janice Harrelson Poteat; his brother Bobby Poteat; his sister-in-law Margaret Poteat; and his brother Dewey Poteat (Faye).

He is survived by : his daughter Stacey P. Clayton (Danny) of Providence; his brothers, Reuben Poteat and Tony Poteat (Vickie); his siblings-in-law, Mark Harrelson and Judy Lawson; his granddaughter Leah; and also Joshua Clayton. He is also survived by three great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
