He was predeceased by: his parents, Fredrick Smith and Mary Fitzgerald Smith; his wife Mary Frances Johns Smith; his daughter Valerie Smith Ferguson; and his siblings, Geraldine Boyd, Floscille Jones, Alina Johnson, Barbara Jean Ward, James W. Smith and Alonzo Smith.
He is survived by: his children, Daphne Smith of Halifax, VA and Edward LeGrande Smith (Andrea) of South Boston, VA; his grandson Frederick Douglas Ferguson, III (Erick) of Danville, VA; and his siblings, Naydine Gunn of Danville, VA, Helen Stackhouse (Bill) of Woodbridge, VA, Leola Motley Judson, Mary Gravely (Bill), Naomi Mathis, Willard D. Smith (Gurdine) of Dry Fork, VA and Arthur Smith (Mildred) of Kensington, MD. He is also survived by other relatives and friends.
