He was predeceased by: his father James Mitchell, Sr.; his wife Martha Ann Wells Mitchell; and his brother Ed Mitchell. He is survived by: his daughters, Leigh Anne Meadows, Thomas of Danville, VA and Mary Beth Wellborn (Bobby) of Chatham, VA; his nephew Joe Mitchell; his niece Beegee Mitchell Brown; and his grandchildren, Ryan Meadows and Evan Wellborn.
