He was predeceased by: his parents, Purcell Bertran Sanford and Mary Louise Butler; his wife Lois Richie Sanford; his daughter Robin G. Powell; and his sister Shirley Palmer.

He is survived by: his children, Joseph W. Sanford, Jr. (Marietta) of Danville, Nelson B. Sanford (Lori) of Columbus, OH and Leslie Ingram (David); his grandchildren, Jennifer Ingram Moss (Jayson), Matt Ingram (Mirina Baylee Stephens), Will Sanford (Leigh) and Ryne Sanford; and his great grandchildren, Katelyn Moss, Bryson Moss and McKinley Jane Ingram.
