He is survived by: his wife Karen Hendricks McCarter; his children, Kristi McCubbins (Barry) and Scott McCarter (Cathy); his siblings, Cindy Peters and Kelvin Rakes; his grandchildren, Carleigh Adkins (Ottoway), Drew McCarter, Taylor McCarter, Heather McCubbins and Connor McCubbins; his great grandchildren, Luca and Briar Adkins; and his pet Piper.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to Hillcrest Baptist Church Scholarship Fund or to God's Pit Crew.
