He was predeceased by: his parents, Lewis Gibbons Carter and Mamie Woods Carter; his wife Ann Fowlkes; and his siblings, Mary Irvine Gay, Virginia Satterfield, Lucy Elliott, Myrtle Shadrick, Frank Carter and Rev. Edwin Carter.
He is survived by: his children, Treva Carter Gould of Danville, Debra Carter Lane of Chesterfield and Dennis Carter (Regina) of Lynchburg; his grandchildren, Steven Gould (Megan) of Danville, Andrea Lane Hammock (Jamie) of Moseley, Rob Lane of Chesterfield and Ryan Carter (Caitlin) of Richmond; and his great grandchildren, Grace, Maggie Hammock of Moseley, Julian and Ellie Gould of Danville.
