He was predeceased by: his parents, Rueben Tate and Lessie B. Tate; his stepmother Nannie Tate; and his siblings, Nellie Amos, Geneva Gammon, Elain Tate and James Tate.
He is survived by: his brother Ronnie Tate of Danville, VA; his sister-in-law Shelia Crisp (Gary); his half-sister Joyce Merricks; his children, Nelson Tate Jr. (Mary Ellen) and Angela T. Roach (E. J.) of Unionville, VA; his close friend Howard Smith; his grandchildren, James Roach (Stephanie Graham), Joseph Roach and Shelby Bucchi; and his stepgrandchildren, Lillian McKee, Landon Mckee and Lawson Brandon. He is also survived by 12 great grandchildren.
