He was predeceased by : his parents, Frank Swope and Edith Swope (Heatwole). He is survived by : his spouse Fay Botkin Rhodes; his siblings, Roy (Swope) and Ellen S. Abernethy (Bobby); and his stepchildren, Debra Rhodes Bosserman (Tracy) and Timothy Paul Rhodes (Jennifer). He is also survived by four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

“I am saddened to read of the passing of your husband, Richard. I read the News Leader every day. To my dismay, I hear of many of my friend's grief. I recall the friendship we had at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Staunton in the 1940s and 1950s. I still have pictures that were taken at the church. I have been living elsewhere for years but am back to Staunton for good. I can still remember some of the names when I look at the pictures. My condolences to your family. Gloria Hulvey Collins”
