He was predeceased by: his parents, James Breckenridge Whitehead and Minnie Whitehead (Christine) of Appomattox; his brother William Whitehead (Billy); Wendy Childress (Elmore). He is survived by: his wife Nancy Gallier Whitehead; his brother James Whitehead (A. C.) of Lynchburg; his children, Mike Whitehead of Florida, Teresa Rowe (Kevin) of Gastonia, NC and Tammy Maddox (Dennis) of Evington, VA; his grandsons, Jordan Rowe (Rebecca) of Clayton, NC, Jason Rowe of Gastonia, NC, Nathan Maddox of Evington, VA and Ben Maddox of Evington, VA; and his great grandchild Josephine Rowe of Clayton, NC. He is also survived by his grandchildren as "Papa".
