He was predeceased by: his wife Charlotte Patrica Clark Merkal of Lynchburg; his parents, Troy Sterling Merkal and Genevieve May Piper Merkal; and his brothers, Richard Sterling Merkal, Dean Arnold Merkal and Rex Lionel Merkal.
He is survived by: his brother Robert Merkal (Marian); his children, Paul Merkal (Maura), Donna Schronce (Don), Carol Lancaster and Daniel Merkal (Roxanne); and his grandchildren, Sarah Taylor (Jon), David Merkal, Andrea Sinclair (Matt), Mary Fish (Dalton), Andrew Sullivan, Karen Hanlon (Sean), Erica Crowder (Justin), Aaron Merkal and Eric Merkal. He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren.
