He was predeceased by: his parents, Edward Franklin Smoot and Virginia Elizabeth Sealock; and his siblings, Elzie Lee Smoot, Virginia Elizabeth Smoot, Alice Madeline Smoot, Phylis Iris Smoot, Agnes May Smoot, Ross Herbert Smoot, Garrett R. Smoot and Jackie Smoot.
He is survived by: his wife Dorothy "Dee Dee" Dorsey Raiford Smoot; his sons, Robert Smoot Troutman and Michael Smoot; his stepdaughter Dianna Raiford Andersen; his grandsons, Zachary and Tyler Andersen; his nephew Marvin Smoot; and his nieces, Gail Sassi Conaway and Phylis Sassi Pierpont.
