He was predeceased by: his parents, James Thomas and Kathleen Gray Bostic Birchfield; his sister-in-law Kimberly Birchfield; and his grandson Jace Birchfield. He is survived by: his spouse Terry Lynn Hannah Birchfield; his children, Joshua David Birchfield (Tiffani) of Harrisonburg and Jessica Lynn Wenger (Andrew) of Linville; his siblings, John Birchfield of Staunton, Daniel Birchfield (Lora) of Hillsboro, WV and Kathy Evans (Kenneth) of Hillsboro, WV; and his grandchildren, Hunter Wenger, Jacob Wenger, Arabella Wenger and Liam Wenger. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
