He was predeceased by: his parents, Roy E. Ryman and Gladys Phillips Ryman; and his brother Ronnie Ryman. He is survived by: his wife Shirley Ann Donovan Ryman; his son Nelson Ryman, Jr. of Harrisonburg; his brother Richard Ryman of Dayton; his grandchildren, Nelson Ryman, III (Melissa), Rebecca Becerra (Wally), Eli Ryman, Billy Bird (Barbara), Alex Bird, Callie McMillan (Jerod) and Brooke McIntyre (Trey); and his great grandchildren, Valentino, Jacqueline and Michael.
