He was predeceased by: his parents, Wesley Whalen and Olive Whalen; his wife Karen Atkinson Whalen; and his brothers, Frederick Whalen and Graham Whalen.
He is survived by: his children, Lori Moss Scaparo (Mark) and David Whalen (Karen); his grandchildren, Ryan, Olivia, Daniel and Katelyn; his siblings, Linda Woodman (Bob) and Ken Whalen (Diane); his aunt Ruby Whelan; his extended family Virginia; and his stepdaughters, Becky Shook, Melissa Pardo (Jessie) and Lisa Hernandez Nieves (Jose).
Visitation was held on Saturday, September 19th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the Bennett Funeral Home, West Chapel (11020 W Broad St, Glen Allen, VA 23060). A memorial service was held on Saturday, September 19th 2026 at 12:00 PM at the same location.
In keeping with David's wishes, those wishing to make a memorial donation may do so to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
