He was predeceased by: his parents, John T. Russell and Catherine M. Connor; his son Joseph P. Russell; his brothers, Richard E. Russell and Joey Russell; and his parents-in-law, Anna and Richard Howland.

He is survived by: his wife Dixie Russell (Howland); his daughters, Coleen Colton (Paul) and Shawn Simmons (Jim); his daughter-in-law Sherry Russell; his grandchildren, Tom Russell, Sarah Russell, John Colton (Nicole), Bryan McDermott (Katie) and Joey McDermott; his great grandchildren, Liam Colton and Violet Rose McDermott; his sisters, Carolyn Ross (Larry Ross) and Kathy Howell (Bill Howell); and his siblings-in-law, Agnes Russell, Richard Terboss and James Howland. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
