He was predeceased by: his parents, Max Wilbur and Pauline Woodward Schaul; his brother Peter; his stepfather Richard Jarvis; his mother-in-law Louise Chinn; and his sisters-in-law, Margaret Hartsell and Nancy Chinn.

He is survived by: his wife Annette Schaul; his children, Stephen Schaul, Jr. and Kirsten Schaul; his father-in-law James T. Chinn; his siblings, Ron Jarvis and Martha Quann; and his sister-in-law Susan Busch (Tom). He is also survived by two brothers-in-law; four nieces and nephews; one great nephew; numerous cousins; and countless friends.
