He was predeceased by: his spouses, Lois McCormick Smith and Gale Phillips Smith; his parents, Hiram Luther Smith, Sr. and Katie Mae Tolley Smith; his daughters, Susan Marie Smith and Gina Hershman Roakes; and his sisters, June Harris and Betty Compton.
He is survived by: his children, Phyllis Daner of Wilmington, DE, Kim Kling (John) of Forest and Charles "Ed" Hershman, Jr. (Becki) of Appomattox; his son-in-law Ray Roakes of Rustburg; his grandchildren, John Z. Hershman (Victoria), Bobby R. Brown, Jr., Brittni H. Leitch (Curtis), Jeremy P. Brown, Heather Shilts (Patrick), Benjamin Luther Hershman (Amber), Ryan M. Witt (Cody), Cliff Kling III (Courtney), Ray Roakes II and Nathan Roakes; his great grandchildren, Balian Hershman, Lilly Hershman, Oliver Leitch, Jacob Shilts, Grace Virginia Shilts, Ruthie Shilts, Caleb Hershman, Lana Hershman, Parker Hershman, John Levi Kling, Mason Kling, Colsenn Witt and Canyon Witt; his sisters, Judy Whitmore (Alan) of Forest and Kitty Shelton of Florida; and his brother-in-law Alfred Compton of Forest.
Visitation was held on Saturday, September 27th 2025 from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM at the Heritage Funeral Service and Crematory (427 Graves Mill Rd, Lynchburg, VA 24502). A funeral service was held on Saturday, September 27th 2025 at 1:00 PM at the same location. A burial was held on Saturday, September 27th 2025 at the Fort Hill Memorial Park (5196 Fort Ave, Lynchburg, VA 24502).
