He was predeceased by: his father William Bryan Herndon; and his grandfather Joseph W. Gillespie. He is survived by: his mother Sandra Herndon Thomas (Cecil); his son Aros Herndon (Blake Rhea); his stepdaughter Miranda Cross; the mother of his children Crystal Herndon; his close friend Charlene Scofield; his sister Stacy Diane Herndon (Tony Byrd); his grandmother Rose Gillespie; and his aunts, Carol Zimoski (Terry) and Beth Hamm (Eddie). He is also survived by one niece, one nephew and several cousins.
