He is survived by: his children, Iris Beane (Wes), Sandra Tinsley, Nachelle Swanson (Isaac), Cherwanda Carter, Jesse Carter, Jr., Anthony Dillard and James Carter (Jennifer); his grandchild Javis Moorman; and his siblings, Martha Hodge, Mildred Gravely, Mary J. Myers, Lois J. Heiniger (Richard), Ernestine Penn (Pete), Calvin L. Gravely (Judy), Donald Hairston, Curtis Hairston, David Hairston and Lamont Hairston. He is also survived by twenty grandchildren; twenty-six great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 3rd 2026 from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM at the Wright Funeral Service – Martinsville Chapel (1425 Greensboro Rd, Martinsville, VA 24112). A funeral service will be held on Sunday, October 4th 2026 at 3:00 PM at the same location.
