He is survived by : his wife Bettie Lu Ayers (Blu); his sons, James Frye Ayers and John Truelove; his grandchildren, Keith Ayers and Katrina Torrence; his great grandchildren, Owen, Lorlie, Wesley, Ayden and Casper; and his brothers, Richard and Ronald.
In 1989 he was chosen as a resident of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities.
