He is survived by: his significant other Sylvia Kaplan; his daughters, Dr. Lisa Barr (Kelly Hayes) of Virginia Beach and Dr. Shelley Binder (Mark Knebusch) of Knoxville, Tennessee; his grandchildren, Becca Barr of Virginia Beach and Josh Barr (Felice Herman) of Fairfax; his stepgranddaughters, Tamsin and Sara Keh; Lisa Stern and Bonnie Sterling. He is also survived by spouses, children, and grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Gil's memory may be made to Jewish Family Service of Tidewater or the Norfolk Botanical Garden.
