He is survived by: his wife MaryLou Downing; his children, Sue Howard (Jim), Leslie Massara, Jennifer Williamson (Chad) and Eric Downing; his sister Jayne Forchas (Dean); his sibling's children, Pete (Linda), Tom Forchas (Maggie) and Amy Donahoe (Jeff); and his grandchildren, Christopher Padron, Parker, Brooke Howard, Jaxon Williamson, Erin, Payton, Jamie, Emma, Charlie and Eric Jr..
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the "Patient Assistance Fund at Sentara Heart Hospital" in memorial of James L. Downing for the remarkable care he received by talented doctors, nurses, and multiple staff members throughout the years.
