He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Spruill Sr. and Estelle Douglas Spruill; his siblings, Glenn Ann Spruill, Josephine Spruill Perry, Stella Spruill-Bagwell and Steven Spruill; and his grandmother Josephine Douglas.

He is survived by: his siblings, Deloris Lawrence (Keith) of Huntsville, Alabama and Joe Ford (Diane) of Chesapeake, Virginia; and his brother-in-law Allen Perry of Elizabeth City. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
