Rachel Dorfman wrote a sympathy message

“Mark was such a warm and sweet guy. He was great with our kids as they were becoming Bar/Bat Mitzvahs- and so warm and gracious when my husband said Kaddish for his parents. His presence was missed at BethEl- and will be remembered always”

Mary Ellen Bowers wrote a sympathy message

“In 2006, shortly after I began my Jewish journey at Beth El, I was hospitalized. Instead of a few days, it became 13 days. Having recently moved to HP, I didn’t know many people & I was feeling down. Mark, someone I hardly knew, came to see me twice during my stay. He shared a little about his life, told some funny/corny jokes (it hurt to laugh) & went out of his way to ease my mind. I will never forget Mark’s genuine kindness during that difficult time. May his memory be for a blessing.”

“I will recall Mark‘s gentleness, and unique sense of humor. I loved to listen to him play guitar. He had a deep passion for his Jewish community and for being a part of a team of Jewish educators. His presence remains in my life and the most comforting way. Cantor Steven Stoehr”

“Mark was a wonderful man and a great colleague. I loved him and missed him when he retired from Beth El. He was kind, silly, and a true mensch! He loved music and golf. He had a great way with kids (and adults too)! Yehi Zichro Barukh! May his memory be for a blessing! Rabbi Michael Schwab”

Maureen Sechan wrote a sympathy message

“We are so sad to hear this news. Mark made such a positive impact on our family’s time at Beth El, and I have so many fond memories of him. When he led Junior Congregation our kids routinely ran into the sanctuary to ask the Tefillah question of the day to get a prize, and they had a great time with him. I especially enjoyed his cheery “Good morning!” greeting…at evening minyan and his entertaining commentary at Minchah learning. He truly was a blessing to us.”

Jackie Melinger wrote a sympathy message

“I am so sorry to hear this. Mark tutored my daughters for their Bat Mitzvahs at Beth El and I worked with him on many programs. He had a sense of humor that made me laugh, he was empathetic and a good sport! I clearly remember him declaring his office a no stress zone to my daughter which helped her so much. He even participated in a video we made to show at her Bat Mitzvah. I always appreciated his kindness. May his memory be a blessing.”

“Lori and I were deeply saddened to learn of Mark's passing. We knew him during his time here in our community at Beth El in Highland Park, Illinois. May his memory be for a blessing....Z"L Richard and Lori Rabinowitz”

Sandy Starkman wrote a sympathy message

“I am deeply saddened to hear of Mark's passing- I had just phoned him last week. I met Mark when he first came to NSSBE. Our family was very close to him. He joined us for meals on Shabbat and sometimes yom tov and he played golf with several members of my family, including my late father in law. He was great with the kids and those of us in the minyan remember him fondly. He is deeply missed. Sandy Starkman and Larry Pachter and family”

Roberta Kwall wrote a sympathy message

“I knew Mark toward the end of his time at Beth El, as he was the ritual director when I joined. I always appreciated his quiet way of wanting everyone to excel in whatever ritual direction they attempted. I liked him very much and was sad when he left, but happy he was returning to a place he loved. I was so sorry to hear of his passing--he truly made a difference at a time when I was new to this community, and I deeply respected him for his knowledge and kind manner. Bobbi Kwall”
