He was predeceased by : his parents, Willie Bates and Odette Thompson Bates; and his brothers, Bruce Thompson and Silas Thompson. He is survived by : his wife Bobbie Bates of Norton, VA; his children, Robin Lee Lynn (Bob) of Laurens, SC, Tammy Marie Bates of Norton, VA and Shawn Bates of Norton, VA; and his siblings, Donald Buford Bates (Bobbie) of Cedar Bluff, VA and Brenda Sloce (Braccle) of Norton, VA. He is also survived by three grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
