He was predeceased by: his parents, Sherman Carter and Beatrice Hamilton Carter; and his siblings, Charlotte Lavinder, Shelby Hurt and Gary "Red" Carter.

He is survived by: his wife Sharon Gray Carter of Norton, VA; his daughters, Tina Carter and Traci Yeary (Denny) of Wise, VA; his grandchildren, Torie Rose (Brad), Tristan Morgan, Austin Yeary, Carlie Yeary, Tatum Morgan and Titus Morgan; his great grandchildren, Aubrey Rose, Ronan Morgan and Asher Rose; and his siblings, Charlie Carter (Debbie) of Stockbridge, GA and Donna Carter (Karen) of Christiansburg, VA. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
