We are sad to announce that, on January 16, 2026, at the age of 84, James Richard Gerling of Palmyra, Virginia passed away. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.
In the soft embrace of remembrance, we recall the profound impact James Richard had on those he encountered along his journey. Though James Richard may have slipped beyond the veil of mortality, his essence lingers like a faint fragrance in the air, a lingering reminder of the beauty and complexity of the human experience.
He was predeceased by: his wife Jane Gerling. He is survived by: his daughter Trisha Guarnieri; his son-in-law James Gerling, Jr. (Jimmy); his grandsons, James, Christopher, Robert, Richard and Jeremy; and his brother Joseph Gerling. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society or the Hospice of the Piedmont.
