He was predeceased by : his former life partner Nancy Downey-Barger; his parents, Samuel Horton and Mary Martha Cupp Barger; and his siblings, Lloyd Horton Barger, Samuel Edward Barger, James Cupp Barger, Helen Barger Turner and Kathryn Barger-Comer.

He is survived by : his sons, Jeffrey Lee and Charles Benton Barger; his granddaughters, Jennifer Barger-Hitt and Jessica Barger-Massara; his great grandchildren, Grayson, Cayden and Julia; and his sister Martha "Bell" Herbert of Richmond.
