He was predeceased by : his parents, Tom Short and Bertha Palmer Short of Short's Gap, Virginia.; his sons, Joseph and Randy Shortt; and his siblings, Truela, Effie Short, Ethel White, Maudie Bronson, Tommy Shortt (Linda) and Jason (Joyce Short).

He is survived by : his significant other Vella Ray; his children, Debbie Lynn Shortt of Lynchburg, Bertha Showalter of Dillwyn, Jennifer Shortt of Newport News and Tim Alley (Crystal) of Bristol; and his sisters, Dorthy Keene of Lebanon and Jean Thomas of Richlands. He is also survived by Many nieces, nephews and cousins.
