He was predeceased by: his son David Albert James; and his brothers, Calvin Rex James and Harold Stephen James. He is survived by: his wife Ina Mae James; his children, Patti Stadlin (David), Mary Ann Clarke (Matt) and John James (Lisa); and his grandchildren, Sarah Stadlin, Kelly Stadlin, Ben Clarke, Kyle Clarke and Grace James.

He also served as President of the Virginia Tech Foundation and Alumni Association Board of Directors.
