He was predeceased by: his parents, Mary Gwaltney West and Perry Gwaltney West; his wife Josie Barrett West; his brother Melvin Gwaltney West; and his son-in-law Richard T. Wheeler Jr..

He is survived by: his siblings, Charlotte West Yates and Perry Gwaltney West Jr. (Gen West); his daughters, Elizabeth "Bette" Barrett West Shiflett (Pendleton M. Shiflett III) and Mary-Elliott West Wheeler; his grandchildren, Richard T. Wheeler III (Marissa Jeness Wheeler), Philip Barrett Wheeler (Tyler Hogg Wheeler) and Elizabeth Pendleton Shiflett Rouse (Robert Wilson Rouse Jr.); and his great grandchildren, Julia Marie Wheeler, Emily Mason Wheeler, Caroline Rollings Wheeler, Ann Kempter Quinn Wheeler, Lillian Barrett Wheeler, Elizabeth Wilkins Rouse and Robert Wilson Rouse III.
