He is survived by: his wife Roxane Coleman Kays; his son Joseph "Michael" Kays (Kimber); his mother-in-law Phyllis Staton Wood Coleman of Lynchburg, Virginia.; and his siblings, Brenda Susan Hoyt (Lynn) of Louisville, David L Kays of Louisville and Mary Jane Hellinger (Tony) of Louisville.
