He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert F. Cowardin and Irene Bush Cowardin; his son J. W. Cowardin, Jr.; and his siblings, Robert F. Cowardin, Jr. and Barbara Patterson.

He is survived by: his wife Bonnie; his daughter Bunny Phillips (James); his grandson James Phillips (April); his great grandchildren, Aubrey and Kenly Phillips; and his sisters, Jane and Shirley. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in Billy's name.
