He was predeceased by: his parents, Fred Thompson and Emma Marie Jackson Thompson; and his wife Wanda Lee Jones Thompson. He is survived by: his children, Gayla Reed of Missouri, David Thompson (Kathy) of Ringgold, VA, Susan Thompson (James Yarbough) of Liberty, NC, Jayne Powers Burnette (Michael) of Millboro, VA and Wayne Thompson of Mebane, NC; and his sisters, Bonnie Whitmore of New Jersey, Florence Jackson of Ohio and Ethel McQuillen of Florida. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 23rd 2026 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 24th 2026 at 1:00 PM at the Floral Hills Memory Gardens (1665 South Boston Rd, Danville, VA 24540).

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made to the Kentuck Youth League, 541 Ringgold Church Road, Ringgold, VA 24586.
