He was predeceased by: his former wives, Phyllis Puckett Hodges and Virginia Harris Hodges; and his son James Edward Hodges, Jr.. He is survived by: his daughter Jane Kotulka (Eugene) of Covington, VA; his stepdaughter Ruth Zein of Chevy Chase, MD; his daughter-in-law Nan Bandura of Ashland, VA; and his grandchildren, Christopher Hodges, Caitlin Hodges, Jeisson Kotulka, Maria Kotulka, Julieth Kotulka and Santiago Kotulka.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Carilion Clinic Hospice, 1615 Franklin Road SW, Roanoke, VA 24061.
