He was predeceased by: his parents, James Elmer and Thelma Counts Bays; his wife Mary Nell Hurt Bays; and his daughter Melissa Katherine Bays. He is survived by: his daughters, Sharon Linkous (Rob) of St. Paul and Christine Fields of Abingdon, Virginia; his grandchildren, Marley Linkous, Hayden Linkous, Katie, Aubrey Linkous and Maddie Fields; his great grandchild Danger; and his sister Mary Kiser (Jack). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews; and a host of cousins.
