He was predeceased by: his parents, Norwegian and Ginger; his wife Ginger; and his child Minda Marie. He is survived by: his children, Mark, Mary, Baheru (Ayalnesh) and John (Liza); and his grandchildren, Marija, Tiana, Mateo, Meklit and Abel. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Dr. Bakken's name to the Augsburg Fund.
