He was predeceased by: his wife Nancy A. Coates; and his siblings, Vernelle Price, Allen, Johnnie, Sherman and Charles.

He is survived by: his children, Hannah (James Chapman) and Charles Coates; and his grandchildren, Jac and Matthew Chapman.
