He was predeceased by: his parents, Andrew Jackson and Sadie Owens Varnell; his siblings, D. Lurlene Whitley, Benjamin G. Varnell, Joyce V. Davis and Fannie P. Harrison; and his son-in-law Mark R. Twiford.
He is survived by: his wife Faye Harrison Varnell; his children, Jerry D. Varnell Jr. (Janice), Jacqueline V. Twiford, Michael E. Varnell, Melissa V. Mounie (Christopher) and Amy V. Callis (Fred); and his grandchildren, Jeffrey P. Luver, Elizabeth Malone, Bennett Twiford (Brittani), Tyler G. Varnell, Katelyn Mounie, Andrew Archibald, Susan Milburn (Greyson), Trevor Varnell and Sarah Archibald. He is also survived by 6 great grandchildren.
