He was predeceased by: his parents, Howard Taft and Thelma Jeanette Owen Anderson; his wife Nancy Nicholas Anderson; and his sister Mary A. Lee Synan. He is survived by: his children, Berri Anderson Rice of Forest, VA and Howard O. "Andy" Anderson Jr. of Arizona; and his sisters, Betsy A. Smith of Roanoke, VA and Gayle A. Saunders of Pennsylvania. He is also survived by five grandchildren, a great-granddaughter.
