He was predeceased by : his parents, Stafford Douglas Nelson and Frances Rea Nelson; his wife Nancy West Nelson; his sister Catherine Nelson; and his niece Kayla Nelson Hill.

He is survived by : his children, Joseph Nelson (Katherine) of Spencer, Virginia and Katie Greenwood (Rusty) of Claudville, Virginia; his grandchildren, Ethan Nelson, Emma Nelson, Abigail Nelson and Ella Greenwood; his stepgrandchildren, Kylie Marshall and Makenna Marshall; his brother Tony Nelson; and his niece Miranda Nelson.
