He was predeceased by : his spouse Vadie Dixon Elder; his parents, Mary Guthrie and Lewis Rufus Elder; and his siblings, Allen, Charles "Dick", Jesse, Jimmy, Steven Elder, Alice Marie Elder, Mary Atkins and Barbara Mason.

He is survived by : his granddaughter Alison Elder Williams (Jake) of Appomattox; his siblings, Michael Elder (Lynn) and Nancy Wilcox (Buddy) of Appomattox; and his nephew Wayne Frank. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
