He was predeceased by: his parents, John Williamson McGavock IV (Lucille A. Kinney McGavock) and James; and his brothers, John "Bill" Williamson McGavock V, Edwin Harris McGavock and Albert Kelly McGavock.

He is survived by: his wife Louise Corell McGavock; his daughters, Nancy Lucille McGavock Dickerson and Deborah Katherine McGavock McDonough; his siblings, Robertson Crockett McGavock, Donald Francis McGavock, Betty Lou Layne Cosgrove and Mary Anne Layne; and his grandchildren, Megan Hathaway (Mike), Ryan McDonough (Lindsey) and Lauren Wren (Graeme). He is also survived by five great-grandchildren.
