He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles E. Gardner, Sr. and Allie Ellen Gardner; his wife Alice E. "Betty" Gardner; his siblings, Charles E. "Teddy" Gardner (Helen), Kenneth L. Gardner (Ella), Mabel Magarity (Alvin), Helen Jackson (Ralph) and Hazel Mitchell (Walter); and his great grandchild Poppy.
He is survived by: his children, Michael Gardner (Jill D.) and Sandra Brill (Melvin); his grandchildren, LeighAnn Gardner, Kenny Gardner (Jaclyn), Allie Anderson (Jared) and Connor Brill; his great grandchildren, Noah, Vivienne and Gloria; and his goddaughter Mary Beth. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life was held on Friday, October 9th 2026 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Sterling Ruritan Club (152 Ruritan Rd, Sterling, VA 20164).
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to: Children's National Hospital in honor of Gloria Gardner, Mel's great-granddaughter.
