He was predeceased by: his parents, Lovell Smith and Lonnie Ritenour Smith; his wife Phyllis Ann Smith; his children, Pamela J. Kerns and Timothy M. Kerns; his siblings, Donald Smith, Fred Smith, Jack Smith, Bobbie Smith, Marie Hamilton, Hazel Andrews and Virginia Scoville; and his grandson Michael Kerns.
He is survived by: his sons, Jerry L. Smith, James W. Kerns and Kenneth M. Kerns. He is also survived by five grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
A graveside service was held on Friday, September 11th 2026 at 2:00 PM at the Panorama Memorial Gardens (4917 Strasburg Rd, Strasburg, VA 22657).
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105.
