He was predeceased by : his parents, Roby Woodrow Rakes and Ola Handy Rakes; his niece Carolyn Holt; and his nephew Ronnie Holt. He is survived by : his wife Nancy Greenwood Rakes; his sister Dixie Lee Joyce of Stuart, Virginia; and his niece Kathy Kisamore (Roy) of Critz, Virginia.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, April 16th 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Moody Funeral Services (202 W Blue Ridge St, Stuart, VA 24171). A funeral service was held on Tuesday, April 16th 2024 at 2:00 PM at the same location. A burial was held on Tuesday, April 16th 2024 at the Wayside Baptist Church (3520 Wayside Rd, Stuart, VA 24171).
