He was predeceased by: his parents, Arthur Labon Whitener and Margurite Catherine Sigmon; his son Mark Whitener; his brothers, Arthur Whitener and Henry Whitener; and his grandson Brandon Lowery.

He is survived by: his wife Betty Ruth Smith Whitener; his children, David Whitener Jr. (Susan), Stephen Whitener, Susan Lowery, Cheryl Mansfield (Rick) and Rus Hayslett (Carey); his siblings-in-law, Carol and Jimmy Smith (Charlotte); his grandchildren, Matthew (Darci), Daniel, Dennis, Shea, Kendall, Courtney, Chase, Tyler and Lily; and his great grandchildren, Audri, Levi, Corrine, Bennett, Quinn and Blake. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
